He prides himself on his ability to communicate complex investment issues in understandable terms. Bill has spoken at over 100 investment conferences around the world. Prior to joining Fleming & Partners, Bill had served from 2010 to 2023 as Global Chief Investment Officer for Alternatives at Mercer, leading a team of over 140 investment professionals responsible for over $30 billion in assets under management and over $150 billion in assets under advice across the full range of alternative asset classes including private equity, private credit, infrastructure, real estate, impact investments and hedge funds. Bill had previously worked for Mercer from 1992 to 2007, initially as an investment consultant in Melbourne, Australia. From 1997 to 2007 he served as Mercer’s first ever Global Head of Research, based in London, with responsibility for overseeing Mercer’s investment manager research globally across all asset classes and the strategic research supporting Mercer’s investment strategy advice to clients. In this role Bill undertook several hundred investment manager evaluations directly, and oversaw the work on more than 10,000 others. In 2000 Bill authored a book on currency management for Japanese pension plans that had been commissioned by the Pension Funds Association of Japan. In 2003 he was named European Investment Consultant of the Year by Global Money Management magazine. In 2004 he devised and oversaw the implementation of Mercer’s Four Factor Manager Evaluation Framework, which continues to be used by Mercer to this day. In between his two stints at Mercer, Bill worked from 2007 to 2010 as a portfolio manager in the multi-manager alternatives team at Thames River Capital, a Londonbased multi-boutique firm that has since become part of Columbia Threadneedle. From 1985 to 1992 Bill worked for the Australian government in Canberra in a senior executive actuarial role that included advising government ministers on the introduction of the compulsory superannuation arrangements for the Australian workforce and providing investment advice to the Trustees of the pension plans for Australian government employees. During this period Bill also worked in his evenings as a tutor in the Advanced Mathematics of Finance subject of the actuarial studies course at the Australian National University.
