Anuj Joshua Mathew, a global expert in investment promotion, currently leads evidence-based advice and strategy formulation in foreign investment for the UK. Notably, he is the analytical architect for UK’s impact based FDI promotion strategy launched in 2018. He also has experience setting direction for long-term policy reforms for improving competitiveness and business environment for attracting high-quality foreign investments both nationally and sub-nationally. Mathew has served as technical adviser to several multilateral initiatives, including as technical reviewer for the World Bank’s Global Investment Competitiveness Report, and UNCTAD’s Investment Policy Reviews. Mathew has also led delivery of cross governmental programmes, including analytical capability building for investment promotion for SDGs as part of UK’s Official Development Assistance in several countries. A highly skilled trade economist, Dr Mathew has dual Masters- in Economics, and in International Economics, before completing his doctorate from University of Nottingham, UK in international trade and FDI in the context of environmental regulation and intellectual property rights. He has extensively published in these areas and has also worked in different countries and policy settings. Prior to joining the UK’s civil service, Mathew worked in academia, and international research institutions focusing on trade and development.
