Strategies to safeguard tourism investment (organised by WAIPA in partnership with UNWTO (tbc))
The outbreak of COVID-19 not only cause a global health and economic crisis, also the tourism sector was hard hit by the ongoing pandemic. According to the WTO 1.1 billion fewer international arrivals were recorded in 2020, leading to an estimated loss of USD 1.3 trillion in export revenues. Moreover “international tourism arrivals dropped by 70 precent, while global FDI into tourism plummeted by almost 74% in the first half of 2020.”
While governments around the world implemented measures to support the sector, the role of IPAs is critical as not only tourism promotion is according to the most recent WAIPA-WBG Global survey on the state of IPAs one of the mandates performed by 23% of all surveyed IPAs also as shown in the same survey, travel and tourism related services are under the top 15 priority sectors as designated by IPAs. WAIPA and UNWTO hence suggested in a paper (forthcoming) a strategy for safeguarding tourism investment during COVID-19. This workshop would aim to discuss the further influence of the pandemic on the tourism sector and the role of IPAs.
