BIOGRAPHY

Matthews is a Partner in our Johannesburg Office. He leads McKinsey's healthcare and life sciences activities across Africa, motivated by a personal passion to expand access to affordable and high-quality healthcare technologies. He advises public health agencies, global public health donors and life sciences organizations to help them create value through innovation and healthcare systems strengthening in Africa. Through his career, Matthews has amassed on-the-ground healthcare experience in more than 25 African countries and has published extensively on healthcare ecosystems in Africa.

Before McKinsey, Matthews was a research fellow at the Aspen Institute in India, focusing on digital healthcare. He has won various awards, prizes and fellowships, including the United Nations Gilbert Murray Prize for International Development, and he is a member of the Ronald Coase Institute. Matthew is a health economist by training, with an MPhil from the University of Oxford where he was a Rhodes Scholar, and a BA from Harvard College, where he was a Davis Scholar.
