Asia and the Pacific is on the frontline of climate change, being a highly vulnerable region but also an important contributor to the climate crisis. Asia’s heavy dependence on coal for electricity and heating is one major cause for the region’s exposure to climate risk. Moving from heavy dependence on fossil fuels to clean energy in a just manner is increasingly a regional priority. In light of this challenge, investment needs for the energy transition in Asia are considerable, particularly in areas such as energy efficiency and energy infrastructure. Attracting investment in the energy transition, however, remains a challenge, due to the higher cost of capital, lack of institutional capacity and less conducive policy environment.

This session aims to discuss scenarios for energy transition in Asia and the Pacific and their implications for the region’s development model. It will explore financial and investment mechanisms that could accelerate the energy transition and adoption of clean energy technologies in the region. It will also examine underlying policies that could underpin the scaling up and expansion of these solutions in the region.

Session themes:

  • Scenarios for energy transition in Asia and the Pacific
  • Innovative mechanisms for financing energy transition
  • The role of foreign direct investment in the energy transition in Asia
  • International cooperation initiatives for enhancing investment in energy transition
